Our annual dinner will feature a keynote presentation by Mr. Reza Banki. Mr. Banki was arrested in 2010 and incarcerated for 22 months during his prosecution, conviction and successful appeal on charges of violating export control laws on Iran. These charges were brought against him as result of having received money from family in Iran. IABA submitted an appellate amicus brief in Mr. Banki’s case in 2011; this was one of IABA’s first major pro bono efforts. Mr. Banki has since spoken on the topic of wrongful prosecution and defects in our criminal justice system in a TED talk and at academic and legal conferences.
Our annual dinner also features three award categories to honor individuals and organizations that have provided distinguished service to the Iranian American community, made a community impact, and have provided significant pro bono services.
