IABA Condemns COVID-19 Based Discrimination & Attacks

The Iranian American Bar Association (IABA) condemns the discriminatory rhetoric and racist attacks against the Asian Pacific American (APA) community in the wake of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. Amid the rising public fear about the COVID-19 pandemic, there are alarming reports of misinformation across the country and attacks targeting APA communities linked to racist assumptions about who has COVID-19. Discrimination and racism have no place in our democracy.

We echo the statements of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and the Asian American Bar Association of Greater Bay Area (AABA), which have denounced increasing anti-Asian discrimination and racial intolerance during the COVID-19 crisis. We support our minority bar association partner’s call to action to report incidents of racism. The Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON) and Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA) have launched a reporting center to allow community members to report incidents of hate they have experienced. We encourage our members to visit this reporting center, which enables individuals who have been directly impacted by, or who have witnessed firsthand, this issue to share their stories.

As a minority bar association, we stand in solidarity with other communities who have been subject of racism and discrimination. During these unprecedent times, it is important that we continue to speak out against discrimination and racism. Now is a time for us to come together to ensure the health and safety for all.
