IABA Resource: Countering Information Suppression in Iran
Recent internet blackouts in Iran underscore the importance of examining whether emerging communications technologies could help people access open information despite censorship and shutdowns. These measures have been used, and continue to be used, by Iranian authorities to restrict information flow during periods of unrest. The FREEDOM Act, a reporting bill introduced in Congress last month, requires the U.S. government to assess whether emerging communications technologies could help counter censorship and shutdowns in real-world conditions.
