IABA Statement on Deportation of Iranian Nationals to Panama
The Iranian American Bar Association expresses grave concern regarding the U.S. Government’s deportation arrangement with Panama, which has resulted in the transfer of Iranian nationals alongside citizens from other Asian countries to Panama as a transit point for eventual repatriation.
On February 13, the U.S. Air Force transported 119 individuals from California to Panama, with plans to deport approximately 360 people in total through this new channel. These individuals have been identified as having no criminal records. We are troubled by the apparent lack of procedural safeguards or due process as required by law, including the preclusion of credible fear interviews.
In addition, reports indicate that individuals deported to Panama encounter significant dangers, including threats of violence, inadequate access to legal representation, and harsh living conditions that fail to meet basic human rights standards. We urge policymakers to reconsider these new policies and prioritize safety, fairness, and the dignity of all individuals, regardless of their nationality or immigration status.
