IABA Statement on Escalating Tensions and Risk of War with Iran

The Iranian-American Bar Association (IABA) expresses deep concern over escalating tensions between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States.

Undoubtedly, further escalation will harm the interests of both nations, and continue to harm the Iranian-American community who already faces significant challenges stemming from new policies, such as the Travel Ban and international sanctions. The IABA calls on all sides to de-escalate tensions, exercise restraint, and respect the rule of international and humanitarian law. Threats of military force not only set the two nations on a dangerous path towards unnecessary and destructive war, but also violate international law, which expressly prohibits “the threat … of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.” Perhaps more importantly, as recently history has taught us, military conflict will devastate the lives of countless people from both countries. We call on both nations and the international community to take tangible steps towards protecting peace and enforcing the norms of international law. We further ask Congress to demand and diligently review all applicable evidence with respect to this concerning development, consistent with its Constitutional rights and obligations to authorize any armed conflict.

As an organization representing the legal interests of Iranian-Americans nationally, we continue to support the Iranian-American community during these difficult times. We are committed to working with our coalition partners and elected officials to support the Iranian-American community, as well as their loved ones.
