Iranian American Bar Association’s Statement on the Israel-Iran Conflict
The Iranian American Bar Association (IABA) expresses grave concern and alarm over the military Israeli strikes on Iran, and the escalating conflict between the two countries. As an organization of legal professionals committed to defending the rule of law, IABA condemns any use of force that violates international law and endangers civilian lives, including unjustified military aggression. We call on all governments to respect their obligations under the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law, including the principles of sovereignty, necessity, proportionality, and the protection of noncombatants.
In times of heightened conflict, it is important to remember that the people of a nation are distinct from the actions, actual or perceived, of their government. We are particularly troubled by statements made by some U.S. officials that appear to endorse military strikes by Israel. Such statements disregard not only principles of law but also the human cost to ordinary Iranians and Iranian Americans, and further reinforce harmful stereotypes that affect the global Iranian diaspora.
We urge all governments and international bodies to prioritize de-escalation through lawful, diplomatic means rather than resorting to violence, and to ensure that meaningful accountability exists for any breaches of international norms. We will continue to watch this situation closely and provide support to our community.
This statement reflects the position of IABA as an organization and does not represent the personal views of any individual member or chapter, unless specifically endorsed.
